Are you a game designer?

Game design is one part of my research, teaching, and art practice that is growing over time. You can find some of my work and work in progress on itch.io.

My favorite tools to play with are Ren’Py, the visual novel engine, Twine, the hypertext tool often used to create personal, emotionally-resonant interactive fiction initially created by Chris Klimas, and Bitsy, the little editor for tiny games and worlds available to use in browser on itch.io, initially created by Adam Le Doux. I started working with Ren’Py as part of co-teaching with Ryan Rose Aceae. For creating and teaching simple game controller design, I have used Makey Makey inventor kit, inspired by mattie brice’s use of the tool in empathy machine (2016) [link].

For more on Twine, see merritt k’s edited collection, Videogames for Humans among other sources. For more on Bitsy, try the tool itself, its tag on itch.io, or the Bitsy Omnibus, intended as a list of all Bitsy games ever made. For an open-source game engine designed with trans and queer game makers in mind, I recommend the Affinity Engine, by briar sweetbriar.
